How do I get started?

To sell real estate in New Zealand you must complete the Salesperson's Course and hold a current Salesperson's Certificate of approval from the Real Estate Agents Licensing Board.

The Salesperson's Course can be completed by correspondence, online, or attending classes provided by one of our accredited course providers.

You have three years from the completion of the Salesperson's Course to start work in the real estate industry. If you do not start work within three years of passing the course, or have a break in employment in the industry for three years or more, your eligibility to sell real estate will expire and you must re-sit the Salesperson's Course.

What are the next steps in furthering my education?

You can work towards becoming qualified as an accredited specialist, or a Branch Manager, or a Licensee and Associate member of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand Inc (REINZ).

How do I qualify as a Branch Manager?

You will need to complete some compulsory units, a speciality topic, courses in finance, law, and management, and some appraisal units.

Once you have successfully completed these, you will have achieved your National Certificate in Real Estate (in your specialty topic), your National Certificate in Real Estate (Branch Manager), and you will have met the educational requirements to become a Branch Manager.

How do I qualify as a Licensee and Associate member (AREINZ)?

You can follow the path above but will need to complete some extra units as well as courses in business administration and planning.

Once you have successfully completed these, you will have achieved your National Certificate in Real Estate (in your specialty topic), your National Certificate in Real Estate (Branch Manager), National Diploma in Real Estate (Licensee), and you will have met the educational requirements to become a Licensee.

Alternatively, you may choose to enrol in the Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Real Estate) qualification with Massey University. Successful completion of six papers through block courses meets the educational requirements to become a Branch Manager and Licensee. Two extra papers complete the Graduate Diploma in Business Studies. Contact Massey University for more information.

Where do I go to get qualified?

You can learn on the job. Similar to an apprenticeship, you'll enter into a formal training agreement with us and your Licensee. We'll provide you with the tools, your Licensee will support you, and when you're ready, we will assess what you've learnt. Download an enrolment form , complete and return it to REINZ ITO.

You can also do the qualifications by correspondence or attending classes provided by one of our accredited course providers.

Will you recognise my experience?

Yes, we will through on job training. You'll enter into a formal training agreement with us and your Licensee and then provide a portfolio of your work performed on the job that meets specific outcomes, and when you're ready, we will assess your portfolio.
